Blog Oklahoma Podcast 46: Opening Pandora's Box

Our poor little dog Widget threw another fit this morning. Why? Dogs don't know about daylight savings time. They don't realize you've changed the schedule. So this morning and every morning since November 1st around 5 AM Widget has to go outside, now! So it's either wake up, drag myself out of bed, and let the dog out, and attempt to start the day; or let Widget throw a fit for just one more hour. It's a no win situation either way. Yawn!

The 31th of October is very special to me. Not only is it home to one of the cooler holidays, it's also the day I became wedded to my lovely Donna. Thank you for 5 wonderful years.

Did you know your fifth wedding anniversary is the wood anniversary?. I'm not sure what I'm suppose to get Donna. Considering the season, I'm thinking of a wooden stake. So she'll have something to protect her from all those Twilight fans. Ooo Creepy!

I was driving home from the office yesterday, and what did I see? Christmas decorations. That's right. Christmas decorations. The City of Elk City has already decorated the street lights down Main street with Christmas decorations. The holiday isn't for another two months and It's already Yule time downtown. What happened to Halloween? What happened to celebrating autumn? I haven't even picked up candy for next Saturday night yet, and now you're telling me is time to go shopping for Christmas?

I guess I'll just have to suffer a winter with a shaggy brown lawn. Welcome to Autumn.

Getting a late start on the podcast today. This weekend just happen to fall on the time I do some end of the month processing for the ol' day job. And that purty much eats up most of the day. I almost just called this one, but I thought I'm sure I can get a podcast out, and if you're listening to this, hey, I did.

I don't know what about the last quarter of the year seems to just fill up with things that need to be done. I think I have more schedule conflicts this fall than I did all summer long, and I thought the summer was busy.

Every week when I visit many of the member blogs for the podcast I notice some people posted daily, some weekly, some monthly, and others well I think they might have forgotten they have a blog. In this era of Twitter, Facebook, and other like services, many of us forget to post in the long form.

So this got me asking myself if I can do something to get you to blog. The answer I got back was probably not, but I'm going to try anyway. So I'm suggesting to the Oklahoma blogging community to declare Wednesday, September 9, 2009 as "Oklahoma, Go Blog Something Day!â

There are no suggested topics. No events to promote. No propaganda to spread. In fact there is no reason what so ever for this day other than the fact to get you to post something to your blog.

Okay I will suggest one thing, post something longer than 140 characters. This is your opportunity to reestablish yourself in paragraph form.

Tell your friends, post to Twitter, Facebook, or where ever you've been hanging out. Encourage your fellow Oklahomans to go blog something on Wednesday, September 9, 2009.

It's that time of year once again that is both joyous and frustrating for young and old alike. It's back to school time for Oklahoma. It's joyous to see all your school friends again, and frustrating to have to get up before noon now. It's joyous to see your children off to school for another year of education and growth. It's frustrating because one you'll miss them, and two its so damn hard to get them out of bed, dressed, and out to meet the bus some mornings.

Please keep in mind on your daily commute to work that all the school zones are now active once again. So please keep an eye out for those kids walking to school or getting on or off the school bus. Let's had a safe and wonderful school year.

I'm in the middle of remodeling our home office / guest bedroom. This is the reason why I haven't put a podcast together in a while. I know excuses, excuses. I'm attempting make other arrangements, and to find a temporary home for my computer and podcasting equipment somewhere around the house. I hope to be up and running again soon, but I can't give a time frame. Please keep your fingers crossed this remodeling project doesn't end up like a Tom Hanks movie. Thanks for your understanding, and I hope to have a podcast again soon.

I originally intended to start off this podcast by read to you the Star Spangled Banner, the poem written by Francis Scott Key on September 3, 1814. Many of you will find it familiar as our national anthem, but remember before it was a song it was a poem. I thought it would make a good patriotic way to end the Independence Day weekend. But I just couldn't do it. It became very challenging to read out loud. I just couldn't do the poem justice. Every time I would start off, I would hear in the back of my head, (tune), the song and you want to sing. And you just can't read it that way. ...

Memorial Day is a time to take stock of the present, reflect on the past, and renew our commitment to the future of America.

Today, as in the past, there are problems that must be solved and challenges that must be met. We can tackle them with our full strength and creativity only because we are free to work them out in our own way. We owe this freedom of choice and action to those men and women in uniform who have served this nation and its interests in time of need. In particular, we are forever indebted to those who have given their lives that we might be free.

I don't have to tell you how fragile this precious gift of freedom is. Every time we hear, watch, or read the news, we are reminded that liberty is a rare commodity in this world.

This Memorial Day (of 1983), we honor those brave Americans who died in the service of their country. I think an ancient scholar put it well when he wrote: ``Let us now praise famous men . . . All these were honored in their generation, and were the glory of their times. Their bodies are buried in peace; but their name liveth for evermore.'' As a tribute to their sacrifice, let us renew our resolve to remain strong enough to deter aggression, wise enough to preserve and protect our freedom, and thoughtful enough to promote lasting peace throughout the world.

Spring has shown me something unique in our yard, an almost perfect circle. The cause of this near perfect circle, a dog named Widget. Widget resides in our backyard on a twenty foot leash. And just like a famous cartoon dog chasing after an equally famous cartoon rooster, Widget is always discovering the end of his leash. He has manged to dig a trench in our backyard in a near perfect circle. At his parameter Widget is ever vigilant, barking at anyone walking down the alley or even a block away. And God forbid a cat should wander to with in visual range.

It's another windy day in Oklahoma, and this isn't just another windy day. It's the 4th day in a row of high winds here in the West OK. It's been 4 days of howling wind, rattling my windows, shaking my trees, and blowing new trash in to my yard. Annoying as it is, the wind does have its benefits. Just over the horizon from my home is a brand new wind power farm. Generating much needed electricity to our state and beyond. Wind is the past, present, and future of Oklahoma. So everyone please remember this the next time your screen door gets blown off its hinges.

Blog Oklahoma Podcast 24: Snow Day

Oklahoma just had one of the worst snowstorms in recent history this past Friday. Many of our friends in the northwestern part of the state are still digging out. For us here in Elk City America the snow got about ankle high. But here it is Sunday and the snow has already melted away. I can see my lawn again. I am however particularly worried about all the plants around the state. It is spring after all, and every thing was starting to turn green. I took a tour of my yard this morning and everything that was green and blooming has wilted. So let's hope all those plants bounce back soon. Hopefully everyone around the state survived the storms well and happy, everyone safe at home nice and warm.

Last night I downloaded their iPhone app and created this 12 second slide show video of my cat, Baby(the cat). Currently you cannot record video with your iPhone, thus the slide show. So how many new years resolutions have you broken already? I can honestly say I've broken none. The reason? I didn't make any this year. There were times past when I make resolutions to lose weight, to exercise more, to even blog more, but most of these are something I should be doing anyway. So why make a new years resolution over it. No this year I'm doing something different. I'm not going to make any fleeting new years resolutions, I'm going to set some specific goals this year. And to prove this to myself mostly, I've added them to my "Remember The Milk" task list. So now I have to do them, their in my task list. And I'm happy to say, I've completed one, and you're listening to it.

I really love fall. The color of the leaves in our neighborhood trees are really striking. Another thing I really like about fall, or October in particular, is Halloween. After Christmas and Thanksgiving its got to be my favorite holiday. And for more reasons than monster movies on TV and free candy, which isn't so free for me anymore. No, there's a really good reason for my fondness for Halloween.

Greetings everyone and welcome to the 10th episode of the Blog Oklahoma Podcast. Wow 10 episodes. I realize in the scope of the pod-o-sphere, my little podcast about life in Oklahoma is barely a drop in the bucket. But I'm happy about it. To me 10 episodes is quite an achievement for someone sitting in the corner of a guest bedroom using a USB Headset microphone, recording with Audacity, and constantly being interrupted by firetrucks, barking dogs, and a cat named Baby.

Blog Oklahoma Podcast 9: Damn Sam

I finally was able to work on part of that task I mentioned last episode, that has been eluding me for some time. I was able to craw up our new ladder, and start the much needed scrapping of the paint. I worked on the job for a few hours removing the old weathered pealing green paint. And just as I was finishing up the sky grew gray and dark, as if something ominous was happened.

On these last few rainy days I got to thinking about my friends. Mostly the friends I've lost touch with. Its been time, distance, or both that has separated us from each other. Everyone gets busy with their lives. You loose track of time, and before you know it years have past since the last time you talked. Oh you might exchange e-mail with them from them from time to time, or not. You might find them again on Facebook, only neither of you really use Facebook all that much. So there you have it, a missed friend. Oh its not your fault, its not their's. You just took separate paths on life's journey. It happens. I myself am missing my best friend. I haven't seen her since my wedding. And that was some time ago. We just lost track of time and each other. Oh don't let me give you the impression I'm sitting here all depressed over it. It just sometimes I'll be reminded of my old friends from a picture on the wall. Or I'll hear a song on the radio, and I'll think, "Hey you know who would like this..." It happens, and I'll miss them. and I'll think, "I really wish it would quit raining."

So I would like to put this challenge out to you, call up an old friend. Get caught up. Renew that friendship. And don't let a year past before you talk to them again.

Its time again for one of the greatest seasons of them all. No I'm not talking about autumn, I'm talking about Football Season. Teams across our nation are taking to the field in the hopes to punch through to the end zone just to hear one of the greatest of words, "Touchdown". This is the time of year when every Friday night is taken up with High School football, every Saturday is booked with College Football, and every Sunday is alive with the NFL. This is the time of year that brings families together and neighbors apart. Its a time where everyone shows off their colors, whether it be red & white, orange & black, or yellow & green. It's also the time of the year where I get to say, Go Big Elks! Go Rangers! Go Sooners! and Go Packers!

Here we sit in the midst of American history. At the time I record this we are between two major party political conventions. The Democratic Party has just finished theirs with a historic night of music and great speeches. Now we get to see what the Republican Party will bring. Unfortunately we are also in the midst of another gulf coast hurricane. Visions of Katrina are on the front of every ones mind at about three years to the day. The mistakes of the past haunt us. Oklahomans around the state are ready with a helping hand. Evacuation centers are being opened for anyone fleeing the coast. To everyone arriving I want you to know that Oklahoma is here for you in your time of need.
